What is a capsule wardrobe? A capsule wardrobe is a collection of classic and versatile clothing pieces that are interchangeable and can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits to get the most out of your wardrobe. These pieces should be classic and timeless staples that don’t go out of style. Depending on your collection and where you live, most items can be worn throughout the year, with small seasonal changes.
I suggest using mostly or all neutral pieces for starting your summer capsule wardrobe. I’ve always been a neutral girl so I am a little biased, but having a great collection of neutral pieces can make building a capsule wardrobe a bit easier.
I’ve included all of the pieces you need to get started on your own summer capsule wardrobe below, followed by a breakdown of each piece.

Staple Pieces to Build Your 2024 Summer Capsule Wardrobe
1. White Jeans
To me, nothing says summer like a pair of white jeans. They can be worn with almost anything and have that fresh, summer feel. I would recommend a straight or bootcut style denim. Remember, the idea is to incorporate pieces that aren’t too trendy and won’t go out of style.

2. Striped Tank
Whether it’s a sweater, tee shirt, or tank, stripes are just such a classic look and an integral part of your capsule wardrobe. My absolute favorite is a navy and cream combo - it always looks refined and elegant.

3. Midi or Maxi Dress
A midi or maxi dress is the perfect summer piece. I’m saying “or” here because this is really your preference. You can’t go wrong either way. I would stick to a black, white, or beige dress to keep it versatile.

4. White Button Down
Can we just have a moment for the classic white button down? In all reality, this probably should be piece number one in how to build a capsule wardrobe in summer 2024. It’s really the staple of all staples and can be worn a multitude of ways and paired with numerous capsule pieces.

5. Linen Button Down
Similar to the white button down, a linen button down can be a great piece for your summer capsule collection. This is also a fun and easy way to sneak a little color into your wardrobe.

6. Blazer
Oh how I love a good blazer. Blazers can be the perfect piece to pull together any outfit in your collection. I really can’t emphasize enough how essential a good blazer is for your summer capsule wardrobe. You can choose a more tailored blazer or an oversized blazer, depending on what your style is. Again, I would stick to a black, white, or tan blazer to keep it interchangeable.

7. Blue Jeans
A good pair of blue jeans is also a must. Find a pair of jeans that fit well and are comfortable. Just like your white jeans, you’ll want to stick to a classic style in these, as well.

8. Flowy Trousers
A good pair of flowy trousers is one of my favorite summer pieces and may be one of the most versatile pieces in your capsule wardrobe this summer. Pair them with a button down shirt for a work day, a swimsuit for a pool day, or a chic bodysuit for date night.

9. Bodysuit
Another important and easy to wear basic for your capsule collection is a bodysuit. I love the idea of a tank bodysuit to stay cool on those warm summer days, while having an option to layer in the cooler evenings.

10. Denim Shorts
Of course you have to have a pair of denim shorts for your summer wardrobe. Now with denim shorts, you have the choice of distressing or no distressing. I honestly feel like either style is fine. I love a pair of distressed denim shorts and don’t see them going out of style anytime soon. Therefore, I would consider them a classic and worth adding to your collection if that’s your style. If distressing isn’t your thing, stick to what you’re comfortable with.

11. White Sneakers
I live in white sneakers during summer. They’re such a fresh look and can be worn with just about any outfit. Not only are they stylish, but also comfortable, which is an added bonus.

12. Black or White Tank
Another basic that you will probably live in this summer is a black or white tank top. Tanks are perfect with skirts, shorts, jeans, and trousers and are great for layering.

13. Accessories
